DivX4 encoding in Xmpeg (FlaskMpeg Xis)
You will need the following software for this guide:
DVD Decrypter 3
DivX 4 codec
Radium MP3 codec (not needed if you
have DivX3 installed on your system)
Bitrate Calculator
Nandub - (if you're aiming for more than 1 CD)
Xmpeg
Step 1: Rip the DVD
DVD Decrypter is ideally suited as it can read almost any DVD and it's also very beginner friendly. You'll only need the file mode of DVD Decrypter. Please disregard any reference to the other modes in the guide.
Step 2: Set up Xmpeg
Xmpeg is a modified version of FlaskMpeg with a different interface, certain very useful additions and it can work in the native YUV2 colorspace which speeds up encoding considerably compared to the regular FlaskMpeg. If you've used FlaskMpeg before Xmpeg won't be hard to use.
Step 3: Calculate the bitrate
Most likely you will want to make your rip fit onto a certain numbers of CDs so it's important to set the bitrate accordingly. A bitrate calculator will help you find the correct bitrate so that the movie won't become too large.
Step 4: Encoding
After having done the basic setup and audio configuration let's move to the specific encoding parameters as setting a resolution, crop the black bars away and configure the codec. Then encode 2 separate passes.
Step 5 : Splitting (optional)
If your output file is larger than a single CD you might want to split it up ;)
